Campus Master Plan: Executive Summary PDF  | Print |  E-mail

The Denver Waldorf School (DWS) underwent accreditation by the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA) in October 2006. One of the recommendations of the accrediting team was to develop and implement a strategic plan. One outcome of the Strategic Plan was the recommendation to develop a campus master plan for the building and grounds in conjunction with an academic plan for a fully realized Waldorf curriculum. To that end, a task force was formed to facilitate the process for a Campus Master Plan (CMP) that will guide all capital improvements, acquisitions, long-and short-term maintenance demands, and future considerations for our indoor and outdoor spaces.

In 2007 and early 2008, the CMP Task Force met with teachers, administrators, and parents to begin the process of creating a shared vision for an architectural program. The CMP Foundation Document is the result of this preliminary work and meant to inform a professional team of planners and/or architects who will develop the formal Campus Master Plan for the school.

During the summer of 2008, the Task Force received affirmation for the Foundation Document and confirmation to proceed from the College of Teachers and the Board of Directors. With the completion of the Foundation Document and the formal approval to proceed, Phase I is complete and Phase II begins. Phase II begins with raising monies to hire a professional planner and/or architect who will work with the DWS community to create a final and complete Campus Master Plan. Phase III will begin once the CMP is approved. Phase III is the physical build-out of components of this plan.

The plan and improvements will need to demonstrate fiscal soundness, environmental stewardship, and community leadership. Most importantly, it must inspire the creation of a physical space that will serve as a living representation of Waldorf education, as summarized in the DWS Mission and Strategic Plan Vision statements. We envision that as an outcome of this plan, visitors from all over the world will come to experience an educational space that embodies Waldorf’s 100-year-old curriculum and commitment to social renewal in the 21st Century. As they walk through the hallways, visit the classrooms, wander through the landscape, they will sense the symbiotic relationship between the fine arts and the academic curriculum that grows daily. They will notice a merging of the inside spaces and the greater outdoors; they will discover an education that is based on the wisdom and knowledge of human development.

The function of this document is to inform the wider community about our efforts and to invite parents, donors, neighbors, professional planners, and architects to join us in fulfilling the promise of Waldorf education in Denver.
