Literature: themes of freedom, good and evil, and the modern condition are studied in such
masterpieces as Goethe’s Faust, Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, and Melville’s Moby Dick.

 Biology Class Drama: the 12th grade will fully produce a play, including back stage work, set design and
construction, costuming, lighting and sound.
Grammar, Vocabulary, and Writing: continued study of appropriate material.
Math
Calculus: sequences, series and limits; differentiation with the Chain Rule; minima/maxima;
Rolle’s Theorem; Mean Value Theorem.
Business Math: checking accounts, loans and interest, stock market, insurance.
Computer science: system architecture and advanced programming.
Social Studies
World history: survey of ideas leading to understanding major contemporary
issues. The role of philosophy, psychology, religion, economic systems and political structures.
Developing Countries: their general problems, geography, economic and political systems, art
and culture.
American History: World War I through Watergate; major challenges to the U.S.
History through Architecture: survey of architecture through the ages; designing and
constructing individual models for public buildings.
Science
Physics: light and color; study of imaging and of the interaction of light with matter, including
reflection, refraction, interference, polarization, quantum absorption and boundary color
phenomena; theories of Newton and Goethe; consideration of methodologies in natural science.
Chemistry: modern theoretical and structural chemistry; atomic and molecular models
developed; equivalence and normality.
 Painting Class
Zoology: study of the life cycles and morphology of major animal phyla; theories of evolution;
lab work includes drawing live and preserved specimens.
Botany: study of angiosperms with particular attention to metamorphosis as an approach to
morphology; attention to the impact of industry on the environment.
Additional Subjects
Artistry: pastels, watercolor, prints and sculpture, bookbinding, leatherwork, batik, weaving, spinning,
dyeing, pottery, gardening, and senior project.
Music: vocal and instrumental music continues.
Languages: Russian or Spanish.
Eurythmy: music and poetry now encompass world classics, such as Bach, Mozart, Shakespeare, Shelley.
Physical Education: Bothmer gymnastics and a variety of games; interscholastic sports as
extracurricular activities after school hours.
